Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
