Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243kg fish came from the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the company president, a notable participant at the yearly January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."
This latest acquisition exceeds his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly prepared for diners at the winner's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
