A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Gang Growth

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the operation, together with multiple guns.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
